Recording mode set to Active Game, enter a game and press REC again

The “Active Game” recording mode only records when Overwolf detects that you are in-game and the game is your active window.
You will see this message if you try to record your desktop while using this mode.

How to fix it:

  1. Start your game, then press the Record button again.

  2. Or change the setting in Overwolf:

    • Go to Settings → Capture

    • Change Record active game to Record monitor
This will record everything displayed on your monitor, whether you’re in-game or not.

Please update video card driver or change selected video encoder

This message appears when the driver for your selected encoder is outdated.

If you’re using a hardware encoder (Nvidia NVENC, AMD AMF or Intel Quick Sync) update your GPU drivers:

Restart your system after installing drivers. If you skip the restart, the error may continue.

Also verify that your graphics card meets Overwolf’s minimum recording requirements.

Selected video settings are too high. Please lower the settings and retry

This error appears when your chosen combination of codec, preset, resolution and FPS is too demanding for your system.

What to do:

  • Lower the recording settings until you find what works best for your PC.

  • If possible, use a hardware encoder (NVENC, AMF, Quick Sync) since they reduce CPU load and allow for higher-quality recordings.

Can’t write video to file / Can't create videos folder

Overwolf does not have permission to create or save files in the selected location.

Solution:

Perform a clean reinstall of Overwolf.

Before uninstalling, back up your recording files if possible (If you're unsure reach out to the app developers for instructions: https://support.overwolf.com/en/support/solutions/articles/9000185804-support-for-3rd-party-apps

Recording not supported in this game

This appears when:

  • The game is not supported by Overwolf (You can view a list of supported games Here.)

  • The game is supported, but recording is disabled for it.

Check the supported games list to confirm.

Additional reason:

Some games use DirectX 8 (DX8) rendering, which Overwolf does not support for recording.

Insufficient hard drive space. Free up space or change target drive

The drive selected in your recording settings has run out of space.

Solutions:

  • Free up space by moving or deleting files.

  • Change the target folder (Make sure to create a backup of your recording files before making any changes.)

    • Click the wrench icon on the video recorder

    • Under Video folder, select Browse or Change

    • Choose a new location

No video encoders found

Recording is disabled while streaming

Due to technical limitations, Overwolf cannot record and stream at the same time.
We plan to add this feature in the future.

For now, choose either recording or streaming.

This appears when the recorder is already busy (for example, starting a new session).

Fix:

  • Close the video recorder and reopen it, or

  • Restart Overwolf

Recording in progress by another app. Stop the recording app and try again

Only one Overwolf app can record at a time. You can find further information Here.
Stop the other recording app and try again.

System sound capture error/No Playback Device

This can occur for several reasons, please try the troubleshooting steps Here.

If troubleshooting doesn’t help, please contact us for further assistance.

Missing system files ▾

The mf.dll file is required for Overwolf’s video recording to work correctly.
Windows N editions do not include Windows Media Player by default, which means this DLL is missing.

To fix this, download the Media Feature Pack for your Windows version:

Unsupported sound format

If you attempt to record using an unsupported sound format, Overwolf will show a recording error.
Switch to a supported audio format and relaunch Overwolf to resolve the issue.
